ABSTRACT

This paper investigates the recovery period of consumer salmon purchase intention after food scares at the Xinfadi wholesale market in China during the COVID-19 pandemic and examines the impact mechanism of risk preference and risk perception on the period duration. Our empirical analysis is based on a survey of 655 salmon consumers in Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai. We estimate that the purchase intention recovery period lasts 21 weeks among the surveyed consumers after the shock. Although the epidemic risk levels of the three cities are different, there is a significant difference only in the recovery period from 5 to 7th weeks. The Cox proportional hazards model results further show that consumers with less risk-averse are more active in resuming purchase intention, and the effect of risk perception is just the opposite. Moreover, risk perception has a moderating effect on risk preference and recovery period. Finally, we put forward three possible policy implications: attaching nucleic acid detection certificate, strengthening cold chain management, and diversifying cooking methods.

BACKGROUND: Due to the emergence of COVID-19, many countries have started mass immunization programs. To date, no cases of optic neuritis following COVID-19 vaccination have been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: Objective: Here, we report 2 cases of unilateral optic neuritis after vaccination against COVID-19 using the Sinopharm vaccine (Sinopharm Group Co. Ltd, China). DESIGN: The clinical history, examination, and test findings of two individuals with unilateral optic neuritis associated with the timing of COVID-19 vaccination were described and further analyzed. SETTING: Two patients developed optic neuritis after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. One patient developed optic neuritis 6 weeks after the first dose and 3 weeks after the second dose. The other patient developed optic neuritis 3 weeks after the first dose. PARTICIPANTS: Two female patients, aged 21 and 39 years. RESULT: The patients were successfully treated with intravenous methylprednisolone pulse therapy. Both patients had typical manifestations of optic neuritis and their visual acuity recovered fully after treatment. The second of these patients was positive for anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibodies (MOG). CONCLUSION: Optic neuritis is a potential adverse effect after vaccination against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus clade 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a single-stranded RNA virus responsible for the global pandemic of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). To date, there are still no effective approaches for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to explore the possible mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 infection in human lung cells. METHODS: Data interpretation was conducted by recruiting bioinformatics analysis, including Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways analysis using downloaded data from the NCBI Gene Expression Omnibus database. RESULTS: The present study demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 infection induces the upregulation of 14 interferon-stimulated genes, indicative of immune, and interferon responses to the virus. Notably, genes for pyrimidine metabolism and steroid hormone biosynthesis are selectively enriched in human lung cells after SARS-CoV-2 infection, suggesting that altered pyrimidine metabolism and steroid biosynthesis are remarkable, and perhaps druggable features after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Besides, there is a strong positive correlation between viral ORF1ab, ORF6, and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression in human lung cells, implying that ACE2 facilitates SARS-CoV-2 infection and replication in host cells probably through the induction of ORF1ab and ORF6.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 outbreak has brought tremendous psychological pressure to the general population, which may lead to depression. Therefore, this study aim to evaluate the prevalence and clinical correlates of depressive symptoms in the general population quarantined during the COVID-19 outbreak in Shenzhen. METHODS: 2237 quarantined general individuals participated in this cross-sectional study from February 14 to March 4, 2020, during their 14 days quarantine. They completed the Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) for depression, Zung's self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) for anxiety, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for sleep quality, and the Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R) for post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). RESULTS: The prevalence of depressive symptom was 6.21% in quarantined individuals. The depressed group were younger, less married and educated, and had higher SAS, PSQI, IES-R total scores (all p<0.05), as well as more avoidance, intrusion and hyperarousal symptoms than the non-depressed group. Correlation analysis showed significant correlations between SDS score and the following parameters: age, marriage, education, SAS, PSQI, IES-R total and its three subscale scores (Bonferroni corrected all p<0.05). Further multiple regression indicated that age, marriage, education, SAS, PSQI, IES-R total score, Avoidance and Hyperarousal factor were independent predictors of depressive symptom. LIMITATIONS: This study adopted a cross-sectional design and used self-report questionnaires. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest an elevated prevalence of depressive symptom in quarantined general individuals in Shenzhen. Some demographic and clinical variables were associated with depressive symptoms.
